Who are Americans?

There are still many negative comments about Americans. So who are we? Why do so many nations and people seem to hate us so much? I have put a lot of thought into trying to determine how I wanted to answer these comments. This is what I have come up with:

I don’t recall anywhere in my history books where it said the people who came here and founded this country [America] were rich. Many were indentured and worked for years to remove that yoke. Many were uneducated, many unskilled, many poor, some slaves, and they all worked together to make something out of a set of ideals, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. The American Dream! They even managed to survive a Civil War that nearly destroyed our country.

I keep hearing how the world hates us, well who are we? We are your cast offs, your poor, your persecuted, your sick, your scholars, your laborers, unskilled and skilled, your religious, your atheist, neo-Nazis, your musicians, your doctors, your lawyers, your unemployed. We are Russian, English, French, Dutch, Irish, Polish, Checq [sp], Dutch, Brazilian, Columbian, Argentine, Guatemalan, El Salvadoran, Cuban, Haitian, Ughandan, Egyptian, Iranian, Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, Sudanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Korean, and Japanese, to name a few.

We are the worst and best of all of you come together and working as one. We are arrogant at times, bicker at times, even fight and kill each other at times much to our sadness. We cry together, die together, laugh together and live together. I prefer to think that we are bits and pieces of all the world has to offer who have learned and are still learning that all peoples can come together and work together regardless of race, creed, religion, or national origin.

We are not perfect! We make mistakes! We are human! We brought with us all your hopes and dreams. We even brought your fears and prejudices. We have learned and again are still learning how to put aside those ways that take away the dignity of mankind. Then we added some of our own. Do we want to take over the world. Hell no! We only want to give back some of what you all gave to us when you sent your own here to live for whatever the reason although sent may not always be in the literal sense correct.

If you hate us, let me suggest you take a closer look in the mirror and a closer look at us, then re-look in that mirror and you will see yourself in all your glory and flaws. Like it or not, we are parts of you all. So, if you don’t like us, take a closer look at home. You may find it easier to see what it is about us you don’t like!

Here is the beginning of my post.
