Open mouth, Insert foot!

How many times have you made a response or comment about an event or situation without first determining the facts? I think at times we all do this, some of us more frequently than others. For some people, it seems to be a repetitive pattern. They may or may not know what they are doing; but, telling them would be a waste of time.

Sometimes you realize right away by the look on people’s faces that you have stuck you “big, fat, foot in your mouth!” Other times people are more tactful and do a good job of ignoring your blunder. They may even be kind and chalk it up to personal ignorance of the situation or facts. Then later a friend or colleague will fill you in on your blunder. Makes you feel like crawling off into a hole somewhere doesn’t it? Most of us do better than that klutz who will never change. But, every now and then we still slip up, especially if we don’t take time to respond instead of just reacting.

Major mike at “Major Mike” has a great post over at his blog about a commenter who wrote in complaining about four jets flying too low in his area and waking him up.

It seems his remarks were felt at a time that was at best ill timed, but bordered on the insensitive. An Air Force pilot who had been killed was being paid tribute at his funeral by the “fly by” of his unit. Tom’s inquiry drew the following response:

” The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Lt. Col. Scott Pleus
Luke Air Force Base
The writer is commander of the 63rd Fighter Squadron.”You can go to the link and read the whole story. While you’re at it pay Mike a visit at his blog, “Major Mike,” at:

He has a great blog and I am sure you will enjoy his comments.
