More Memories..

In the Marine Corps, “esprit de corps” is drilled into our heads from the first moment we hit bootcamp. Our mental attitude is every bit as important as our other skills. By the time bootcamp is over, most Marines are so “gung ho” you can’t stand to be in the same room with a bunch of us!

We had a big ceremony on graduation day. All the dignitaries gave their speeches. If you were lucky your family was in the stands and watched as you got your emblems and any awards you earned.

After all the hoopla, the platoons all came to attention and did a pass in review in front of the dignitary stand. What stood out most to me was the music. The band played all the usual marching songs by John Phillip Sousa. As we came around the parade deck and approached the stands the band played the Marine Corps hymn and we did an “eyes right” salute.

At that moment , as the Hymn played, I thought, this is the proudest day of my life. Now I was glad for all those days filled with drills. It seemed like we did more drills than anything else. As we marched past the stands, in perfect formation, I knew it had all been a lead up to this day. To this day, if I am in a mall or some other place and marching music is played, I catch myself marching in time to the music, instead of walking. I left the Corps in 1971!
